What to bring
Your own tent and sleeping gear if you have it — or ask us about renting one when you book, and we’ll have it ready. Beyond that, warm layers matter more than people expect. Machakos nights run noticeably cooler than the daytime heat suggests, especially once the fire dies down.
A torch or headlamp is worth packing too. The grounds are unlit past the fire pits, and finding your way back from the restrooms in the dark is easier with your own light than relying on someone else’s.
What there is to actually do
Beyond the tent itself, most first-timers end up doing some combination of a guided nature walk, stargazing once it’s fully dark, and sitting around the fire longer than they planned to. There’s no fixed schedule — it’s closer to a long, unhurried evening than a packed itinerary.
Most people plan for one night and end up wishing they’d booked two.
